Luton looks back on record-breaking May
London Luton Airport is looking back on a record-breaking May which saw 1.6 million passengers travelling through its doors.
In fact, May saw passenger numbers up 10% on the same period last year, thanks to major events taking place in Europe.
The airport says key international events like the Europa League and UEFA Champions League finals gave a significant boost to May's passenger numbers, as football fans flocked to support their clubs abroad. Extra flights were added to transport supporters to Baku and Madrid for the matches, as scheduled services sold out across all airlines.
However, passenger numbers soared for one particular destination thanks to a different European event.
The Eurovision Song Contest was held in Tel Aviv in May, and the number of passengers travelling to the city increased by 9% compared to May 2018. This made Tel Aviv the fourth most popular destination among London Luton Airport passengers for the month of May 2019.
The three most popular destinations among Luton Airport passengers for May 2019 were Amsterdam, Bucharest and Budapest.
May 2019 also saw London Luton Airport launch its updated fast track security service, complete with LED light wall to deliver a peaceful and less stressful journey through to the departure lounge for passengers.
The fast track security lane is now open from 4am until 9pm every day, and is free for any passengers travelling with El Al and easyJet.
Passengers travelling with different airlines can book online to use the fast track lane for just £4, or pay £6 on the day.
Alberto Martin, CEO of LLA, said: “As our May figures show, growth continues steadily at the airport following a record-breaking April. The re-launch of our Fast Track Security product is yet another example of how we’re transforming the passenger experience at LLA following our £160m redevelopment.”
