New direct flight from Glasgow to London set for launch

Airline Loganair is set to launch a new direct flight from Glasgow to London this spring.

In fact, the airline is set to launch three new services between Scotland and London in a major development in UK domestic air travel.

From 28 May, Glasgow Airport passengers will be able to fly directly to London Southend Airport every weekday, with three daily services, as well as on selected weekend services.

The flight schedule for this service is designed to help commuters travel to the English capital and back each day.

Loganair is also launching similar services to London from Stornoway and Aberdeen, aimed at connecting Scotland to London more efficiently.

Operated by the Embraer 145 regional jet aircraft, the Glasgow to London Southend service will take just 1 hour and 20 minutes, with a 53-minute train service available to take passengers straight into London Liverpool Street station.

Loganair’s managing director Jonathan Hinkles said: “We’re incredibly excited to be offering the first new air links between London and Glasgow in many years.

“These new fast and frequent flights to London’s favourite airport, together with our inclusive checked baggage allowance and on-board service, make this a hugely significant development for both Scotland-London air links and Loganair.

“Southend is a very convenient and well-positioned gateway to the Capital. It has been voted the UK’s Best Airport three times, perfectly complementing Loganair’s recently earned European Airline of the Year accolade.”

“Our schedule is designed to offer maximum flexibility for passengers regardless of their requirements – whether that’s a one-day return, overnight stop or a longer break exploring the city. It’ll also be attractive to leisure customers from South-East England wishing to visit the Highlands and Islands with only a quick transfer in Glasgow.

Glyn Jones, CEO of Stobart Aviation, owners and operators of London Southend Airport: said: “All of us at London Southend Airport look forward to welcoming Loganair as our newest airline in May, when these flights begin.

“With our own railway station just 60 steps from the terminal door, up to six trains an hour into London and our award winning customer service, we expect these new routes to prove very popular with customers flying to and from Scotland.”

Paul White, Glasgow Airport’s head of aviation, said: “London continues to be one the most popular destinations with our passengers, so the introduction of this service by Scotland’s airline Loganair is fantastic news.

“As well as being a popular route with both business and leisure travellers, London is the UK’s top shopping and visitor destination. Glasgow remains the most popular location for shoppers outside of London, so this route is sure to be a big hit with passengers looking to enjoy some serious retail therapy at either destination.

“We’re really pleased to also re-establish our links with London Southend Airport as this service will offer our passengers even greater connectivity to one of the world’s most iconic and exciting cities.”

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “We warmly welcome the addition of Loganair’s new air link to London. It provides even more options to Glasgow’s overall transport network and offers a schedule which will definitely appeal to the business community.

“A recent economic impact study confirmed the major £1.44bn contribution Glasgow Airport makes to the Scottish economy, and in line with its growth plans, this new route will bring more passengers into the city and increase our overall capacity for trade.”

Tickets on this new service will be available from £39.99 one-way, with 20kg checked baggage included. Tickets are on sale now.
