Long-haul boom leads to record cargo month at Gatwick

A boom in long-haul travel last month saw cargo tonnage reach record levels at Gatwick Airport during April 2018.

The airport saw 3.7 million passengers travelling through its doors during the month, with long-haul travel up by 21% year-on-year – this saw cargo tonnage increase by 23.2%, making it a record month for cargo.

And long-haul growth is set to continue, with the announcement that Qatar Airways will launch a new service to Doha this month. This will further strengthen Gatwick’s international connectivity.

North Atlantic destinations proved extremely popular with passengers during April, with Boston seeing an increase of 79.9% compared to last year’s figures. Meanwhile, LA saw a 60.5% year-on-year increase and New York was up by 38.3% compared to April 2017. Passengers also flocked to long-haul locations like Goa, Hong Kong and Dubai.

Gatwick is now preparing to embark on its summer recruitment drive, with 1200 new jobs available at the airport.

Gatwick Airport Chief Executive Officer Stewart Wingate said: “April’s figures demonstrate the key role that Gatwick plays both for the country and the local area – with exceptionally strong long haul and cargo growth.”

“We are adding more global connections this month, starting another brand new route, to Doha – providing Gatwick passengers greater onward connectivity to Asia and Australia and increased cargo capacity for Britain.

“Closer to home, we are delighted to be recruiting for our seasonal summer support across the airport with roles available in our retail and restaurant portfolio as well as aircraft servicing teams – further boosting the role that Gatwick plays in our region where the airport already supports 1 in every 12 jobs.

“Yet we’re ready to do more and have exciting plans for growth maximising the use of our existing facilities whilst we also offer the country the prospect of a financeable and deliverable new runway scheme.”
