Busiest year ever sees 15.7m travel through London Luton

London Luton Airport serviced a record-breaking 15.7 million passengers during 2017, adding up to its busiest year ever.

The boom in passengers throughout 2017 amounted to an 8.6% growth when compared to 2016 – and this is only set to continue as the airport looks ahead to 2018.

This year, London Luton Airport marks its 80th anniversary. And the celebrations will take place throughout the year, with the official opening of the extended terminal building and the launch of a new eight-gate boarding pier lined up already.

The extension to the terminal building will see a host of new shops and restaurants available to London Luton Airport customers.

As well as enhancements to the airport itself, 2018 will see even more destinations on offer to the travelling public, when they choose to fly from Luton.

Wizz Air is set to launch eight new routes which will include Athens, Keflavik in Iceland, Bari in Italy and Larnaca in Cyprus. Meanwhile, easyJet – which is London Luton’s largest airline – will introduce five new services including Genoa in Italy and Reus in Spain.

Last year, 22 new routes were launched to London Luton Airport passengers, amounting to a total of 140 destinations available overall. Destinations on offer span Europe, Asia and Africa.

London Luton Airport is in the process of investing £150 million as part of plans to increase annual capacity by 50% by 2020.

Nick Barton, London Luton Airport’s CEO, said: “2017 has been another record breaker at LLA, and we look forward to welcoming even more passengers as we enter our 80th year.

“Throughout 2018, passengers will see the airport transformed as we officially open our new terminal and reach the first phase of construction for the Mass Passenger Transit* system which will replace the current shuttle bus and create a rapid link between the train station and the terminal.”
