Busiest ever October and record new routes for London Luton Airport

Last month more than 1.5 million people travelled through London Luton Airport, making it the busiest ever October.

The figures were a 7.9% increase when compared to October 2017.

2018 has been an incredible year for London Luton, with 36 new routes added to its offering over the course of the year.

Airlines easyJet, Ryanair, SunExpress, Wizz Air, Thomas Cook Airlines and Tui all added new destinations for Luton Airport passengers. These included Verona, Tallinn (in Estonia) and Gibraltar.

Now, London Luton Airport passengers can travel to more than 30 countries and 70 destinations all over the world.

London Luton Airport is coming to the end of its £160m, three-year transformation programme. The biggest investment in its 80-year history, the programme has been designed to offer passenger better access, services and facilities.

The airport’s terminal has undergone a significant upgrade, to make it quicker and more comfortable for passengers to travel through.

The security search area has been expanded to help passengers pass through seamlessly, and reduce waiting times.

A new boarding pier has also been launched this year.

London Luton’s departures lounge has been completely revamped, with more than 30 new stores opened. Included in the new retail space are designer brands like Chanel and Hugo Boss, as well as leading high end high street names Oliver Bonas and Rituals.

The transformation programme has been designed to increase capacity to 18 million people (per year) by 2020. This is to meet the ever-increasing demand from the travelling public.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said: “This is an exciting time for the airport, as we continue to welcome more passengers and introduce more routes. Our transformation will only improve passengers’ journeys, making them easier and more enjoyable. We look forward to our passengers, staff and local community feeling the benefits of a busy and successful airport.”
