Best summer ever at London Luton
London Luton Airport is celebrating the busiest summer in its 79-year history after serving 4.7 million passengers in just three months.
Figures from June to August 2017 revealed a 7% increased compared to last year’s summer period, with 1.6 million customers travelling through the airport during August 2017 alone. This made August the 41st month of consecutive growth at London Luton Airport (LLA), and marked a 6.8% increase compared to August 2016.
And the good news for LLA doesn’t end there, as the airport’s ambitious investment plans are well underway after being announced last year.
In order to meet growing demand and increase capacity by 50% by 2020, the airport is carrying out a £1.5 billion transformation plan. In the past 12 months, the airport has unveiled an expanded security search area, new shops and restaurants and a new dual carriageway access road to ease traffic and help customers reach the airport more easily.
Plans have been approved for a £200 million mass passenger transit (MPT) system, which will run a shuttle service to and from Luton Airport Parkway station and connect the airport to central London in just 30 minutes.
The driverless rail link will operate 24 hours a day and offer customers an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport. What’s more, it will provide customers with a park and ride option via Luton Airport Parkway station.
Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said: “This summer we welcomed a record number of passengers to the airport, highlighting our continued popularity with business and leisure travellers alike.
“Upgrading our transport links is essential to meeting this demand. We want to create an express-style service with four fast trains per hour, which will speed up our passengers’ journeys and provide essential capacity. It will also allow us to make Luton Airport Parkway station an integrated transport hub which will benefit the UK, the Three Counties region and bring us in line with the other major London airports.”
