2018 was busiest year ever for London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport has announced that 2018 was its busiest ever year.

The airport has revealed that a total of 16.6 million passengers travelled through its doors in 2018, which represents a 5% year-on-year increase.

In December 2018 alone, London Luton Airport serviced more than 1.26 million passengers, which was almost 20% more than December 2017.

During 2018, London Luton launched its £160 million transformation programme, aimed at growing capacity by 50% to 18 million a year by 2020.

Last month, London Luton’s new terminal was opened by Chris Grayling MP, Transport Secretary. The upgraded terminal boasts 48 new shops and eateries, including a Chanel store.

Other updates included an additional 3,000 seats, a new boarding pier and improvements to transport links.

This year, London Luton Airport passengers will be able to use their Oyster and contactless cards on all train services between London and the airport, in further upgrades for customers.

Work is also underway on the Direct Air Rail Transit, which will connect passengers to central London in less than 30 minutes, 24 hours a day.

The top three most popular destinations among London Luton Airport passengers during 2018 were Amsterdam, Bucharest and Budapest.

In total, London Luton Airport saw 136, 270 flights in 2018, while a total of 92.5 million air miles were covered.

The busiest day of 2018 at London Luton Airport was the 10th August, when 60,022 people travelled through its doors.

The 21st December was the busiest departure day, with 30,288 passengers jetting out of the airport ahead of the festive period.

Meanwhile, the busiest day for arrivals was 31st August 2018, as 30,534 people returned from holiday.

Alberto Martin, CEO of LLA, said: “2018 was a landmark year for LLA as we welcomed more passengers than ever before, celebrated our 80th anniversary, and opened our newly-upgraded terminal.

“As we enter the New Year, we will work hard to ensure that the benefits of our transformation are felt by our passengers, staff and the local community in the years ahead.”
